Cult car meets young talent

Postbus apprentices get the “duck” back on the road

Eight apprentices from Lower Austria and Burgenland are restoring a 1965 Citroën 2CV as part of the Postbus Apprentice Project 5.0. Alongside their regular training in the Postbus workshops, where they work on modern buses every day, they are now dedicating themselves to a special project: the complete restoration of a classic car. The cult vehicle has already been dismantled step by step at the Hollabrunn workshop before being professionally refurbished and restored to its original condition. The legendary “duck” will then be auctioned off for a good cause as part of the LICHT INS DUNKEL auction. Previous projects have already raised around 170,000 euros in donations.

While the apprentices mainly carry out repair and service work on buses in their day-to-day work, this project enables them to build a vehicle from scratch – from the bodywork to the engine, brakes, and transmission, right down to the finishing touches. This gives them hands-on experience of vehicle technology from A to Z and allows them to hone their technical skills in a unique way.

At the same time, the application phase for apprenticeships starting in September 2026 is already underway: ÖBB Postbus is looking for 30 apprentices across Austria in four different trades – five of them in the eastern region.
