Who is entitled to free travel?

Students are entitled to free travel (Schülerfreifahrt) if

  • they are under 26 years of age at the beginning of the school year (27 for anyone having completed his military or civilian service)
  • receive Austrian family benefits (Familienbeihilfe)
  • travel on at least 4 days a week (for students of vocational schools also starting from 1 day a week) between their school and their place of residence.

Apprentices are entitled to free travel (Freifahrt)

  • up to the calendar month of their 26th birthday (27th for anyone having completed his military or civilian service)
  • if they receive Austrian family benefits (Familienbeihilfe) and
  • travel on at least 3 days on public transport services.

How do I get the free travel card (Freifahrtsausweis)?

  1. Get yourself an application and a payment form (e.g. at your school, place of apprenticeship or from any issuing office).
  2. Complete the application form (please read the help section!).
  3. Have the application form confirmed by the school/place of apprenticeship.
  4. Pay the cost contribution of 19.60 Euro.
  5. Submit the application, payment confirmation and a photo to your school or the competent issuing office.
    Note: A stamped, addressed envelope is required in Carinthia, Lower Austria and Burgenland.
  6. For students and apprentices who are neither Austrian nor EU/EEA citizens, a document of the Austrian tax office at the place of residence is required, confirming the receipt of Austrian family benefits (Familienbeihilfe).

Note: Apprentices require a free travel card (Lehrlingsfreifahrtsausweis) for the travel to their place of training. For the travel to their vocational school, however, they require a free travel card for students (Schülerfreifahrtsausweis). Therefore, they have to pay the cost contribution of 19.60 Euro twice!

Where can I get the application form for free travel cards for students and apprentices (Schüler- and Lehrlingsfreifahrt)?

Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland: as a rule, students can get the application from their school and apprentices from their apprenticeship company. Apprentices can also request the form from the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer).

Upper Austria: Students can get the form at their schools or from the transport undertakings. Apprentices can get the application form from the transport undertakings, their apprenticeship company and the apprentice office of the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer).

Salzburg: Students can get the forms at their schools and from the Transport Association (SVV). Apprentices can get the application form from the transport undertakings, the Transport Association (SVV), the apprentice office of the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer) and their apprenticeship company.

Vorarlberg: Students can get the form at their school and, in exceptional cases, from the transport undertaking. Apprentices can get the form from their apprenticeship company, the Chamber of Labour (Arbeiterkammer) or the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer).

Tyrol: Students can get the form at their school, from any transport undertaking and the Transport Association (VVT). Apprentices can get the form from their apprenticeship company, any transport undertaking and the Transport Association (VVT).

Carinthia: Normally, the students can get the application forms at their school, in exceptional cases also from the respective issuing office. Apprentices can get the application form from their apprenticeship company, the apprentice office of the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer) or the transport undertakings.

Styria: Normally, the students can get the application forms at their school, in exceptional cases also from the respective issuing office. Apprentices can get the application form from their apprenticeship company, the apprentice office of the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer), the transport undertakings as well as on the website of the Transport Association (Verbundlinien).

Can I give my application form to the bus driver?

Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Carinthia, Styria: Yes, if the application form has been fully completed and a photo, the proof of payment of the cost contribution as well as a stamped, addressed envelope has been enclosed.

Upper Austria: Yes, if the information supplied is complete and a photo as well as the payment slip for the cost contribution has been enclosed.

Salzburg, Tyrol: Yes, if the information supplied is complete and the payment slip for the cost contribution has been enclosed.

Vorarlberg: Yes.

How much is the cost contribution?

The cost contribution that is collected by the Federal Ministry is 19.60 Euro in all of Austria. The cost contribution covers 1 school year for students (including vocational school students) and 1 year of apprenticeship for apprentices.

Note: If a non-scheduled school transport service and a scheduled service are used for the free travel of students/apprentices, the cost contribution must be paid with payment form to the Federal Ministry ? NOT to the transport undertaking!

Who can I contact if an incorrect card has been issued?

Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland: You can contact the Transport Association (VOR) or the respective Postbus transport station. For the VVNB, the card can only be changed by the issuing company (exception: return of the card or new issuance because of relocation).

Upper Austria: A change because of incorrect issuance can only be made by the original issuing office.

Salzburg: You can contact the issuing offices specified on the application form.

Vorarlberg: You can contact the issuing transport undertaking.

Tyrol: You can contact the Transport Association (VVT) or the respective Postbus transport station.

Carinthia: Please contact the respective issuing office.

Styria: You can contact the respective service office.

What do I need to do if I lose my card?

Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland:

  • Report the loss to the police or the competent municipal office.
  • If the police or the municipal office does not issue a notice of loss, a loss notification can be issued instead (available at the issuing office).
  • The notice of loss or loss notification is required by the issuing office to issue a card duplicate. A fee of currently 6.00 Euro is payable for the issuance of the duplicate.

Upper Austria: A duplicate can be informally requested at any issuing office, subject to a fee of currently 7.30 Euro.

Salzburg: A replacement card can be requested from any issuing office specified on the application form.

Tyrol:

  • Report the loss to the police or the competent municipal office.
  • The notice of loss or loss notification is required by the issuing office to issue a card duplicate. According to the tariff regulations of the Transport Association Tyrol, a fee of currently 10 Euro is payable for the issuance of the duplicate.

Carinthia:

  • Issuance of a loss notification (available at the issuing office or as download from www.kaerntner-linien.at).
  • The loss notification is required by the issuing office to issue a card duplicate. According to the tariff regulations of the Kärntner Linien, a fee of currently 7.00 Euro is payable for the issuance of the duplicate.

Styria:

  • Issuance of a loss notification (available at the issuing office).
  • The loss notification is required by the issuing office to issue a card duplicate. According to the tariff regulations of the Verbund Linie, a fee of currently 5.00 Euro is payable for the issuance of the duplicate.

What do I need to do if the card is no longer legible or damaged?

Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Carinthia: If the card is damaged or no longer legible (respective decision at the discretion of the driver or control body), a replacement card must be issued by one of the issuing offices. If the damage or illegibility is caused by your own fault, you will have to pay a fee for the issuance of the duplicate:

  • Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland: currently 6.00 Euro
  • Carinthia: currently 7.00 Euro

Upper Austria: A duplicate can be requested at any issuing office, subject to a fee of currently 7.30 Euro and the return of the old card.

Salzburg: A replacement card can be requested from any issuing office specified on the application form.
